How to predict your own future

What if the future isn't something you find? What if it's something you participate in creating? Creating your future isn't about controlling the outcome. It's about deciding how you're going to participate.

The future isn't somewhere you arrive

We spend a surprising amount of time wondering what is going to happen to us. Will this work out? Will I meet the right person? Will my business succeed? Will I ever feel different? Will I find my purpose? What will my life look like in five years? Sometimes we treat the future as though it's somewhere we're travelling towards — already built, waiting for us to arrive.

But what if the future isn't something you find? What if it's something you participate in creating?

Two beliefs

“Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so.” — David Brooks.

Both parts matter. You have to believe something different is possible. But then you have to believe that your choices matter. Not that you can control everything. You can't. Life will surprise you. People will disappoint you. Opportunities will disappear and unexpected ones will arrive. Things will happen that you could never have predicted. Creating your future isn't about controlling the outcome. It's about deciding how you're going to participate.

It happens in ordinary moments

Sending the email. Starting the course. Having the conversation. Going for the walk. Making the appointment. Asking for help. Leaving something behind. Trying again. Saying no. Saying yes. Creating something nobody has asked you to create yet. Choosing not to repeat the same pattern. Doing one thing today that your future self will be grateful you did.

Oscar Wilde supposedly captured the alternative rather dramatically: “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” And that raises a bigger question: Are you actively living your life, or have you slowly started managing it?

Waiting, and fear

There are seasons when survival is enough. There are responsibilities we can't simply walk away from. There are times when putting one foot in front of another is a huge achievement. But there are also times when we realise we've been waiting. Waiting until we're more confident. Waiting until we have more money. Waiting until someone gives us permission. Waiting until the children grow up. Waiting until work calms down. Waiting until we're less afraid.

Fear may never completely disappear. As Sammy Davis Jr. put it: “You always have two choices: your commitment versus your fear.” I don't think every decision is quite that simple. Fear is sometimes useful. It protects us. It tells us to pay attention. And genuine barriers exist. But fear shouldn't automatically get the deciding vote.

This is the Choose part of the Balanse Method

You noticed what was happening. You faced what was true. Now you decide what you want to do with that information. This is where you move from drift to design.

What do you want your life to contain more of? How do you want to feel? Who do you want beside you? What kind of work feels worth doing? What does looking after yourself actually mean? What would enough look like? What would make your life feel richer rather than simply busier? And then comes the most important question: What can you do about it today?

You don't need to create the next ten years. You don't even need to know exactly where you're going. Choose a direction. Take one step. Pay attention to what happens. Learn. Adjust. Choose again. That's how lives change. Not through one perfect decision, but through hundreds of small decisions that gradually begin pointing in the same direction.

Try this today

Imagine yourself a year from now. Not your perfect life. Your better life. Ask yourself: What am I doing differently? What did I stop tolerating? What did I start prioritising? What choice did I make that changed the direction I was travelling in?

Now bring yourself back to today. What's one choice you can make now? Because the best way to predict your future might not be to predict it at all. It might be to start creating it.

Key Takeaway

Balanse helps you turn clarity into action. Use the Balanse Method to notice where you are, face what's true, decide what you want and take the next right action across your mind, body, relationships and purpose. Notice. Face. Choose. Then keep choosing.
