Changing what you haven't faced

Changing what you haven't faced

There are things we know before we're ready to admit that we know them.

Changing what you haven't faced

Sometimes the hardest part isn't changing something. It's admitting it. Because once we acknowledge something, we can't quite unknow it again.

The things we know before we admit them

That a job isn't making us happy anymore. That we're exhausted. That a relationship needs attention. That we've stopped taking care of ourselves. That something we once desperately wanted no longer fits. That we're drinking, spending, working, scrolling, eating, achieving or keeping ourselves permanently busy because stopping would mean having to feel something. That we want more from our lives.

And sometimes the hardest part isn't changing it. It's admitting it. Because once we acknowledge something, we can't quite unknow it again. So we tell ourselves we're fine. We minimise things. We compare ourselves with people who have it worse. We focus on everything that's going well. We stay busy. We wait for the right time.

You already know more than you think

“Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” — James Baldwin

I've learned that you can spend an enormous amount of energy trying not to look at something that your intuition has already recognised. There's another quote I love: “At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.” — Lao Tzu.

I don't think that means we always have some perfectly formed answer waiting inside us. Life is much messier than that. But I do think we often know more than we give ourselves credit for. We know when something feels wrong. We know when we've drifted away from ourselves. We know when we're saying yes but meaning no. We know when fear is making decisions for us. We know when we've outgrown something. And we often know what the next right thing is long before we feel brave enough to do it.

Space to tell yourself the truth

That's why one of the most important parts of the Balanse Method is creating enough space to tell yourself the truth. Not to judge yourself. Not to immediately fix yourself. Not to create a 27-point improvement plan. Just to notice and face what is actually there.

Take your life area by area.

Mind: what thoughts, fears or patterns are taking up too much space?

Body: what has your body been trying to tell you?

Relationships: where do you feel connected, safe and yourself — and where don't you?

Purpose: does the way you're spending your days still feel meaningful to you?

Facing something isn't blowing your life up

You don't have to blow your life up because you discover something isn't working. Facing something does not automatically mean leaving the relationship, quitting the job, selling the house or reinventing yourself by Monday morning.

Sometimes the bravest first step is simply saying, “This isn't working for me anymore.” Or, “I want something different.” Or even, “I don't know what I want yet, but I know I don't want to keep living like this.” That is enough to begin.

Awareness isn't failure

One of the biggest shifts I've made in my own life is understanding that awareness isn't failure. Seeing something clearly gives you choices you didn't have while you were avoiding it. You can't change every circumstance. You can't control every person. You can't rewrite everything that has happened. But you can decide how you want to respond from here. That's where your power is.

Try this today. Finish these sentences without overthinking them: Something in my life I know isn't working is… Something I've been avoiding admitting is… What I really want is… The next right action might be… You don't have to act on every answer today. First, just tell yourself the truth.
